Folktales 2025

In Progress

On the precipice of adulthood, teenagers converge at a traditional folk high school in Arctic Norway. Dropped at the edge of the world, they must rely on only themselves, one another, and a loyal pack of sled dogs as they all grow in unexpected directions.

The Filmmakers

Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady are Oscar and Emmy nominated directors and the owners of Loki Films in New York. They are known for shining a light on unknown worlds with empathy and cinematic flair. Heidi and Rachel have directed than 7 feature-length docs together. Their most recent film, ENDANGERED (HBO), is a searing portrait of journalists under threat and a collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow. Their buzzy docuseries LOVE FRAUD (Showtime) exposed the wily ways of a dastardly con artist with wicked humor. Ewing’s first narrative feature, I CARRY YOU WITH ME, won two awards at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and was released by Sony Pictures Classics.

Reviews

“Subtly moving. A gentle film with emotional power that truly snuck up on me...It will make you want to jump on a dog sled…” RogerEbert.com

“A warm and big-hearted crowdpleaser set against a cold and seemingly inhospitable backdrop, FOLKTALES is beautifully shot, alternating between the intimacy of its treatment of the human subjects and dogs.” The Hollywood Reporter

“The Most Inspiring Film at Sundance Is About…Norwegian Dog Sledding. The shivering hearts at this year’s Sundance Film Festival were all warmed by this surprising heartfelt film about Norwegian teens coming into their own on a dogsled…With formal polish and deep compassion, it proves to be the most heartwarming film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.” Daily Beast

“A timeless tale of coming into one’s own is given a refreshing spin… Big believers in boldly cinematic nonfiction storytelling long before it was in vogue, Ewing and Grady’s confident compositions give a sense of strength for their subjects that it may just take a little while to see for themselves.” The Moveable Fest
